To Be a Pro Golfer, Start Young: A Fan’s View
If you want to make the best all-time pro golfer list, it might be a good idea to start at an early age. According to Golf Digest, the best of the best started before they were out of high school.
Bobby Jones, the founder of the Masters Tournament, won his first neighborhood match at the age of six. By the time he was 12, Jones had a state championship under his belt. Arguably hailed as the best golfer of all time, Jones gave up his golf ambitions at the age of 28 to pursue a legal profession.
Jack Nicklaus is another golf legend that gained his love of the game early in life. He won his first Ohio State Junior Championship at age 12. Nicklaus won the U.S. Open at age 22 and went on to win 18 major championships. The “Golden Bear” was a member of the Ryder Cup teams, six times, and captain twice. Nicklaus won his final major tournament in 1986 when he won his sixth Masters.
Another celebrated pro on the list by Golf Digest is Ben Crenshaw. Crenshaw turned pro and won Q School at the age of 21. Crenshaw received his nickname “Gentle Ben” after breaking his putter during Ryder Cup play. Crenshaw won 19 times on the PGA pro circuit, with two of his wins being the Masters. He was inducted into the World golf Hall of Fame in 2002.
What list of young greats would be complete without Tiger Woods? At age 2, Tiger putted with Bob Hope, while on the Mike Douglas show. At age 3, he was capable of shooting a 48 for nine holes. The list goes on and on; the number one finishes throughout his playing career are to numerous and varied to put into one article. Tiger is the only one on the list still playing pro. At 36 years old, Woods has quite a few prime playing years left to chalk up an even more impressive of list of victories before he retires.
If you have kids that shows interest in golf, it is best for them to start playing while theyre young. Practice makes a perfect athlete.
